Episode 63 – Rea Kolbl – How a PhD Student Found Obstacle Racing and New Athletic Career

Share

Rea Kolbl is an athlete on the Spartan Pro Team and a Ph.D. student at Stanford. In her first full year of obstacle racing, she has accomplished a laundry list of achievements including winning the last race of the Spartan US Championship series in West Virginia, cementing the 2nd place in the US Championship Series overall. She also placed 2nd in the inaugural US OCR Championship, her first non-Spartan OCR race. She lives and trains in the San Fransisco Bay area, with trail running being her main obsession. When not on trails she is either working in the lab, traveling to races, or annoying her partner in crime, husband Bunsak Pra.

On the podcast, she talks about her history in gymnastics and how obstacle racing gave her a second chance to be an athlete and more.

    • Apple blossoms are out of this world at the moment.
::
Spring is the best as everything comes alive again and you can feel and see the new beginnings all around.
::
Growing up in the northeastern US apples are a huge thing. Not so much in Utah. So happy we were apple to plant this McIntosh tree in our yard. Although, I still dream of Cortlands but they don’t grow around here so happy to have what I have and our McIntosh tree is in full bloom!

    • What better way to spend #earthday2018 than working with “weeds” in our backyard?
::
Creating tinctures, infusions, chips, and more.
::
Weed is an interesting word. In reality a plant is just a plant. However, we add labels to plants. Yet, I am finding many of the “weeds” in the backyard are the most potent healing plants and packed with vitamins and minerals.
::
Working with nettle and purple deadnettle today.

    • Perspective is key. Have you ever thought about how you would experience the world from another’s point of view?
::
I watched the most massive worm make it’s way across the garden the other day and wondered...
:
What is the world like from the worm’s point of view?
:
I have spent a bunch of time in conversations lately being asked about my stances on several issues.
::
I find myself telling people - the answer is nuanced. As there often isn’t a black or white answer. As our culture continues to change, so do many beliefs. But that’s a humanist view.
::
What if we started to try to look at the world from another species point of view? How would our opinions change?

    • How much do you know about the cannabis industry?
::
Did you know it was a $9 Billion dollar industry in 2017 and is projected to be $11 Billion Dollars this year. It employs over 120,000 people in the US alone - @cnnmoney
::
@yourfavoritedabmom Kate Phillips the founder of the Boston Chapter of @womengrow and manager of @theorywellness talks about the state of the industry in Massachusetts currently. Some of the federal regulations, testing of products, how to talk to your friends and family about your career in the cannabis industry, what to expect if you go to a dispensary, where the funny strain names come from and so so much more.
::
The industry seems to be evolving daily and we talk about the end of prohibition in the US and what it means for adults and patients.
::
And just in time for 420 😏

    • Sights around the yard as spring is starting to pop. My mom once told me late season snow actually helps add nitrogen to the plants. Not sure if it’s true but I can say after the on and off snow the last two weeks everything looks great and super green around the yard.
::
Just call it springtime magic or magick 😌
