Ep. 122 – Anne Champagne – The First Woman to Outright Win a Spartan Ultra Beast

When Anne Champagne crossed the finish line at the Spartan Stoneham Ultra Beast she made history. Not only did Champagne win the race for women she beat all the men by over 45 minutes. I checked with Spartan HQ to confirm my suspicion that Anne was the first woman in the race company history to outright win an Ultra Beast.

Spartan confirmed that she was the first women to ever accomplish this feat and that only two other women in the companies history outright won a Spartan of any distance but that race was not an Ultra Beast according to Spartan HQ. The first woman to ever win a Spartan Race outright was Faye Stenning at the Tri-State Sprint in Tuxedo, New York on June 18, 2016. Faye was on the podcast on Episode 43 you can listen to it here. The other woman is Rea Kolbl who outright won in both Hawaii (Super and Beast) and Lake Tahoe Sunday Beast all in 2017. You can listen to her on Episode 63 of the podcast.

Champagne joined me via a Skype call from her home in Quebec, Canada to talk about it all just days after she won the race. Champagne has been an obstacle course racer for years and frequently finds herself on podiums in both Canada and the United States.
