Day 72… Sometimes it’s Just a Swim

Posted on August 18, 2011 by Margaret Schlachter

It’s easy to opt out, too tired, long day, too whatever. The excuses are all around to build into why NOT to stay on a workout plan. Today after a day of coaching the kids in our summer dryland camp the last thing I wanted to do was go out and go for a swim. I was tired and felt tired all day, still sore from Monday and all around uninspired. I had planned with my workout partner the night before to go swimming today. We had decided to go out after the camp was done. It must have been something in the air as he was just as unmotivated as I was to get out and do it.

Finally, after sitting around for a bit talking about how we didn’t want to go out and swim, we jumped in the car and headed over to Woodard Pond. As we were getting out of the car, he wasn’t feeling it and his body was telling him after some intense sessions lately it was time for a rest, at this point I could have said eff it and we could have jumped back in the car and headed home. Instead, I said fine, you can hang here on the shore and I will go for the loop we were going to do together. Once I was in the water I still wasn’t super motivated, I pushed through this workout. I was definitely still feeling Monday’s workout but the swim helped loosen me up. I did push myself and got in a quick but good cardio workout. As I left the water I was out of breath. I knew I had gotten a pretty good workout despite being unmotivated. On the ride home I realized I had actually pushed it pretty hard during the swim and was a little tired. I had actually swam the loop in record speed and set a new PR.

Sometimes you have to say eff it and just go out and push through the negative thoughts. I am glad I went out and did it even if it wasn’t some sort of inspiring or transformative workout. Sometimes you just have to go out and get the job done. Today was one of those days! Not everyday is going to be a mind blowing transformation, some days it’s just putting int he time and getting the job done. Tonight here a little bit from our training session this afternoon with the kiddos. Little Spartan Chick in the making!
