Nutrition Review: Epic Bars

Epic Bars

Be Epic. Eat Epic.

epic-bar-packagingThe final of the new products showcased at Hunter Gatherer were a new bar called Epic Bar. Not your traditional protein bar filled with a bunch of items you can’t pronounce their names. Instead an Epic Bar is filled with meat, nuts and dried fruit. It’s Paleo, Gluten-Free, Low Glycemic, High in Protein, Soy Free, Grass-Fed meat, and much easier to eat than jerky.

Prior to the race I saw Epic Bars was going to be a sponsor of Hunter Gatherer and happened to see them at a new Real Foods Market (while on a mission for Raw Milk) right down the street from my house. I wanted to try out the bars before starting a race where these would be the only aid given at aid stations. I got home shared them with my boyfriend and his brother. We all agreed we liked them. My personal favorites were the turkey and bison bars, with beef coming in third for me.

Race day I munched on several Epic Bars during the race and used them in conjunction with other whole food bars (Garuka Bars) the combination of the two were great! I loved being able to switch from the sweet taste of the Garuka Bars to the meatiness of the Epic Bars. It definitely gave me a full feeling while racing and produced a high calorie to weight ratio.

Pros:

– Real Food – it’s not a bar full of chemicals

– Taste – nothing like some bison while on the trail

– Easy to eat on the move

Cons:

– Price – Real food costs more at $34.00 for a case of 12.

– Beef Bar was a bit dry, so make sure to have water

Overall, these are a great compliment to have in the bag for a long day of hiking or running. We are sticking to the Bison and Turkey Bars in the future at our house as the beef wasn’t my favorite. Bison is definitely top of the list as it combines not only bison but also bacon and cranberry, anything with bacon elevates a bar to a winning combination in my opinion.

Below is detailed Nutrition information on each of the bars, as they all vary a little.
